Kaolin, a soft, white clay of fine particles and pure coloring, can prevent water loss, alleviate digestive pains, and induce blood clotting. A menstruating body sweats, cramps, bleeds and aches, in addition to the responsibilities it carries. Water, when heated, can remove toxins from the body and alleviate pain.
In this performance, the water from my bath has been collected into a large pail, becoming an embodiment of the physical (in the form of blood, mucus, discharge, sweat, dirt and tears), mental and spiritual releases occurring during the bath. This water, containing the elements of my menstruating body, is poured into a bone-dry kaolin vessel, which is then held in my arms; a process endured three times, each with a different kaolin vessel. The kaolin and the water are left to be absorbed by the ground, allowing the materials and myself to become part of the earth.
